The Modernist painter Henri Matisse (1869-1954) came from the north of France.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The first time he laid eyes on Nice, he instantly knew that the light here would make a world of difference to his work.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
From December 1917 to March 1918, when he first moved here, he rented a room in this building, the Beau Rivage on 107 quai des États-Unis.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
His room had a magnificent view of the sea and the Bay of Angels, and Matisse said:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“When I understood that I would see this light every morning I couldn’t believe my good fortune.”

After several weeks of relentless heat and sun, a few clouds and even a bit of rain has been really refreshing and uplifting the last few days.

The best part is that the air is still warm even when it’s cloudy.

Balmy, is the perfect word, I think.
Like the soft caress of a luxurious body lotion on one’s skin.

Mornings are my favourite time of day.

I get up and out as early as I possibly can.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A walk along the ocean. Taking photos.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sitting down for coffee at my new favourite patisserie ☕️🥐
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This morning as I ordered my café noisette (espresso with a tiny bit of whipped milk) and croissant for the third early morning in a row, the lady behind the counter said: “Noisette et croissant. Comme d’habitude.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I just love that expression: “Comme d’habitude “ = as usual.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But even more, I love the fact that people in France often take notice of and remember what I order and what I like. It feels good to be seen and taken notice of in this crazy world 🇫🇷

I was out at 7 this Sunday morning, walking along the seaside, taking photos, and just breathing in the tranquility.

Then an early morning breakfast with a view to the Église Saint-François-de-Paule, a peaceful and quiet Baroque church with beautiful artwork.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
BTW, the croissant at Boulangerie Jeannot is the best I have had in Nice so far ☕️🥐
