If you could have your Sunday morning coffee anywhere in the world today, where would you be?
And what book would you be reading?

☕️ I would have mine at Wellington Coffee on George Street in Edinburgh - with their scrumptious scones and clotted cream
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📚 I would sit there and finish reading the last few chapters of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🪄 Then I would take a long walk in the Old Town and in the magical Edinburgh January light and pretend I was in Hogsmeade (I just love Edinburgh at the end of January)

Upon rereading Bram Stoker’s DRACULA, I am stunned at what a literary masterpiece it actually is.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In so many movies this story has been reduced to camp and kitsch, but Stoker's prose and all the different voices of the characters are masterfully done.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Published in 1897 - just a few years after Robert Louis Stevenson’s DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE - it carries on the same modern Gothic tradition of moving the scary and uncanny away from remote monasteries in Spain and castles in Transylvania and into our own London and well known world.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The book consists of diary entries, letters, and newspaper clippings, and it pieces together one of the most unsettling tales imaginable. And yet the psychological benefits and delightful thrill of peeping into the darkness of that vast labyrinth we all have inside, while seated in the safety our own home, cannot be overestimated.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“Why,” I often ask in my classes, “does Dracula not have a mirror image?”
And the answer is, of course: “Because Dracula IS a mirror image.
So when Jonathan Harker stares at the looking glass, even though Count Dracula is standing right behind him, he sees only himself.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My favourite character by far is Abraham Van Helsing, that kind, wise, weary European gentleman with undertones of Dr. Freud.
Named after Stoker’s father, Van Helsing symbolizes, said Stoker, the luminous father, even as Count Dracula symbolizes the dark father.
