I would love to share a very personal story with you:
During the last few weeks, I have been feeling confused and doubtful about my business: What courses, products, and content should I offer to create the most value for you? Will I be forced, finally, to raise my prices if my business is to survive? (considering that my own expenses for running all aspects of it have gone up between 25 and 40% in the last year), and on and on the questions go.
So I decided to sit down yesterday morning to meditate in an attempt to calm and ground myself. I made a cup of tea and lit a candle. I put my noise-canceling headphones on and pressed play on a soundscape called Tropical Beach. I sat down and closed my eyes and started breathing slowly and focused my mind.
The sound of the waves made me feel transported to a tropical beach, and I started relaxing. I opened up to a possible encounter with an archetypal side of myself. As you probably know, I consider fictional characters as having important archetypal qualities, and I half expected someone from LOST (my favourite TV series) to show up, as they often do.
But to my surprise, out of the ocean in front of me came Nokk, Elsa’s powerful water-shaped horse from Frozen II.
Shortly afterwards, Elsa herself emerged. She sat down in front of me, and before I had time to say anything, she looked at me and said: Focus on the adventure!
It was immediately clear to me that what she meant was: instead of looking at the endless logistics, administration and the eight full-time jobs I have to constantly juggle myself in order to successfully run that business, I should focus on the fact that I am extremely lucky to have created for myself a mission in life, a vocation which is a continual adventure that satisfies perhaps the most quintessential part of who I am.
This advice from the part of me that Elsa and Nokk represent reframed and shifted my perspective drastically, so that right at this moment, I am sitting at my desk, writing you this blog post with a mindset that is completely aligned with my original WHY (as in, WHY am I doing this at all?).
It’s a way of life
Being a small business owner is a very lonely and insecure endeavor with constant worries, endless decisions, overwork and underpay, and Elsa is a huge source of inspiration to me because she too creates her empires all by herself and alone. She is the ultimate expert at precisely the problem I was facing, so I immediately took her word for it: that more than anything, our way of living, hers and mine, IS an adventure.
There are, by definition, elements of solitude and loneliness involved whenever we live out the sides of us that are related to the archetypes the adventurer, the wanderer, the explorer and so on. But living that way also makes all aspects of life an adventure, a pilgrimage, a quest.
